About Our Department
 
The Community Development Department provides coordinated services to the public through courteous, efficient, and cost-effective processing of projects that maintain and/or improve the quality of life and orderly development within the County while balancing environmental, economic, and social concerns. The Community Development Department provides a one-stop location for public contact. Fees are charged to the applicant pursuant to the adopted Master Fee Ordinance of Del Norte County.

The Planning Division is responsible to review and recommend action on projects submitted to the County for compliance with the County General Plan, Coastal Plan, County Codes, and Ordinances as well as any applicable State and Federal regulatory review and laws. The Planning Division must coordinate the timely review of submitted projects in compliance with State mandated process requirements and adhere to the provisions of the California Environmental Quality Act.

 
Building Inspection Division

The Building Inspection Division is responsible for the review and processing of permits for construction activities regulated by the Uniform Building Code as adopted by the State of California and as modified by Del Norte County. Other applicable codes are the Health and Safety Code, the Business and Professions Code, the California Administrative Code, the Uniform Fire Code, and other codes relevant to public health and safety regarding structures. The Building Inspection Division also provides assistance to the public prior to and as part of a permit. The Division also provides plan checking for compliance with applicable codes prior to authorization to begin work.

 
Engineering Division

The Engineering Division participates in the review and compliance determinations for projects before the County. This Division assists the Road Division in the maintenance and improvements of the County Streets and Roads system. The Engineering Division is responsible for flood control structures, County Service Areas, the County addressing program, and the review of drainage plans, grading plans, improvement plans for new development, and also assists other divisions of the Department and other County Departments in the maintenance and improvement of County infrastructure.

 
Airports Division

The Airports Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the commercial airport of the County, Jack McNamara Field (CEC) also known as the Crescent City airport. The Division is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of two general aviation airstrips: Ward Field (0O9) in Gasquet and McBeth Field (S51) at the Klamath Glen.

Roads Division

The Roads Division is responsible for County roads and streets (194 miles of paved and 109 miles of unpaved roads) and bridges (33) throughout the County. County maintained roads include Parkway Drive, Lake Earl Drive, and the streets adjoining the City of Crescent City. County roads also include roads within lands owned by other agencies including but not limited to South Fork Road, High Divide Road, Patrick’s Creek Road, French Hill Road, within the Smith River National Recreation Area and Walker Road within the boundaries of the Redwood National Park. The Roads Division responds in times of inclement weather and during emergencies. The Road Division also maintains County flood control ditches and structures within the flood control system.
